"Scared?"
"No."
"Sure about that?"
"Oh my god," Rachel muttered, tying her hair up for the third time, looking quite pale. "Will you shut up?"
"I dunno if I will," Luke said, leaning on the car as their mum unloaded their suitcases, Sage hooting plaintively from her cage on the pavement, "you sure you can do enough magic? You know they kick you out if you can't do the basics-"
"Mum!"
"Luke," Marissa said exasperatedly, hair flying in her face as she hauled the last suitcase down – Luke's was stuffed to the brim and taped shut with several layers of duct tape – "will you stop tormenting your sister? And help me with these bags?"
"Sorry, mum," he said, not before giving Rachel a quick flourish of his wand – "you aren't allowed to do that outside school you're not scaring me!" – and grabbing his two suitcases and Sage, who hooted as he was flung to the other side of his cage. Rachel's cat, an evil-looking white fluffball, growled from inside his wicker basket, rain pouring down around them.
"Rach, grab your demonspawn and your bags, let's go," he said, bags rattling against the soaked pavement as he forced them over the curb.
"Luke, hold on," Marissa called after him. He stood in the middle of the pavement outside the entrance to Kings Cross, rain-splattered and looking decidedly un-Muggle with his owl and two suitcases, even though he was dressed in jeans and a hoodie, and determinedly staring down any curious looking commuters. Rachel, by the car, suddenly looked like she was about to cry.
"Mum," she said, voice trembling, "I don't think I want to go-"
"Oh, Rach, come on," Luke said, immediately dropping his bags and rushing back to wrap his arm around her shoulders, squeezing her tight. "I'm just being an idiot, trust me, this school is the best thing you'll ever experience. The food, mostly." She gave a watery smile, sniffing hard. "And you'll meet the best friends of your life. I promise you that. Plus, you've got a big tough seventh year brother and two big fifth year sisters to beat up all the Slytherins if they're ever mean to you."
"What if I'm in Slytherin, though?"
"We'll cross that bridge if and when we come to it, love," he said gravely. Luke prayed that didn't happen, but it was up to the sorting hat, not him.
