Name: Minerva McGonagall
Date of Birth: 4th October 1935
Age: 61
Occupation: Transfigurations Professor, Head of Gryffindor House, and Deputy Headmistress of Hogwarts
Appearance-
Height: 5"9
Hair: Black, combed into a tight bun
Eyes: Green
Overall Appearance: Professor McGonagall has been described as ‘severe-looking’ with black hair combed into a tight bun. She rarely ‘let’s her hair down’, so to speak, instead choosing to remain distant and stately in her appearance, with a prim expression usually found on her face, or a disapproving glare. She wore a crooked witch’s hat, and robes of either her favourite emerald green colour or tartan. She was a fan of tartan, often wearing earmuffs in the print to Quidditch matches. McGonagall wore square spectacles which she would use to look down through sternly. These glasses matched the markings found around the eyes of her animagus form; a silver tabby cat.
Personality: Minerva McGongall was the one the strictest teachers at Hogwarts, believing in a firm hand when dealing with the students. She suffered no nonsense, dealing out punishments to all Houses fairly, even her own. She was respected (and feared) by all students, and known for her lack of favouritism, even when dealing with her own House. Despite this, she held the core values of a Gryffindor; believing in strength and courage, and viewing cowardice as a great flaw. McGonagall had a dry sense of humour, but tolerated little joking around from students. Despite this, she was warm and kind, offering a helping hand to all students in need. She was a huge supporter of Dumbledore and Harry, and defended them against the likes of Umbridge.
Likes: She enjoys needlework and knitting, mostly in the tartan pattern. She holds a great love for Quidditch, especially when Gryffindor wins.
Dislikes: McGonagall dislikes silliness and joking around, leading to a huge disapproval of the Weasley twins. She despises cowardice and underhandedness, causing conflict in her interactions with Slytherins.
Strengths: McGonagall is incredibly powerful and talented magically, and has surprising physically strong for someone of her age. She holds a talent for dealing with miscreants and teaching, commanding the attention of a class effortlessly.
Weaknesses: McGongall can be very set in her ways, causing friction when the Trio come to her for help. This is not aided by her dislike for breaking the rules, which can cause her to be stubborn and stern beyond reason.
History: Minerva McGonagall was born on the outskirts of Caithness in the Scottish Highlands. She attending Hogwarts from age 11, proving to have a talent for Transfigurations. She formed a friendship with Pomona Sprout in her time there, and the two would later teach together at Hogwarts. She thrived at Hogwarts, joining the Quidditch Team and receiving an Outstanding in all her N.E.W.T’s and O.W.L’s. She was both a Prefect and Head Girl, and won the Transfiguration Today Most Promising Newcomer award.
After leaving Hogwarts, she was offered a position at the Department of Magical Law Enforcement of the British Ministry of Magic. Whilst returning to her family home one more time before leaving for London, McGonagall met a farmer’s son called Dougal McGregor, and fell in love. The two eventually got engaged. However, McGonagall couldn’t wed a muggle and never tell him of her magic, having to lock away her wand and give up all ambition, as she had seen her mother do the same with her father and be miserable for it. She broke off the engagement and left for London, heartbroken.
Minerva worked in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the Ministry of Magic for two years after graduation, before returning to Hogwarts to teach Transfiguration. She later replaced Dumbledore as Head of Department after he ascended to the position of Headmaster of the school, later becoming Deputy Head.
McGonagall taught many influential students, including the Marauders and Lily Evans, whom she formed a close bond with. She was a key member of the Order of the Phoenix during Voldemort’s first rise, doing all she could to defeat him. After Voldemort’s defeat and, distraught at her former students’ deaths, she left Harry Potter at Privet Drive, along with Dumbledore and Hagrid.
She carried on teaching at Hogwarts, and married Elphinstone Urquart, despite still loving McGregor, although kept her last name. Three years into their marriage, he died on a Venomous Tentacula bite, and she left the cottage they had been living in and moved into the Hogwarts castle.
She taught Harry Potter Transfigurations, supporting him through his first four years, and when Voldemort rose for the second time she joined the Order of the Phoenix again. She developed a prickly relationship with Delores Umbridge, especially when Umbridge was appointed Headmistress. During the O.W.L’s examinations, Aurors attempted to take Hagrid away and when she intervened, McGonagall was hit by four Stunners to the chest. She was moved to St. Mungos to recover.
She didn’t return to Hogwarts until after the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, resuming both her teaching and Order of the Phoenix duties. She participated in the Battle of the Astronomy Tower, later becoming devastated to know that she had allowed Snape to pass by her, who murdered Albus Dumbledore. She held Dumbledore’s funeral and received the position of Headmistress of Hogwarts briefly, before being replaced by Umbirdge.
